Face ID under the outer screen is being tested for the second Duo Plausible
Apple is testing second-generation iPhone Duo prototypes with Face ID hidden under the outer display, aimed at 2027. An Action button is also under discussion.

· 2027 anniversary iPhone
"Glass-centric" redesign still on track for 2027 Likely
A shell made only of two glass panels proved too hard to mass-produce, so the plan is glass front and back around a metal band. Still planned for the iPhone's 20th anniversary in 2027.

"All-glass iPhone cancelled" Disputed
Supply-chain checks led the analyst to say the all-glass iPhone was dropped. Bloomberg and two Weibo leakers said the opposite within two days; what was dropped looks like the glass-only shell, not the redesign.

How we rate sources
Most bad iPhone coverage treats every leak the same. We sort sources by track record; when two credible sources disagree, we say so instead of picking.
Tier 1: Strong record
Mark Gurman (Bloomberg), Ming-Chi Kuo (TF International), The Information, Ross Young (display analyst).
Tier 2: Mixed record
Bank and supply-chain analysts (Jefferies, Barclays…): good on volumes and orders, weaker on designs and dates.
Tier 3: Hit-or-miss
Weibo leakers (Digital Chat Station, Fixed Focus Digital, Instant Digital): often early, often right on screens and parts, sometimes wrong.
What the statuses mean
Apple announced it or said it on the record.
A rumor that Apple's own launch has since proven right.
A source with a strong record, or several independent sources agreeing.
One credible source, nothing against it yet.
Another source with a record at least as good says the opposite.
FAQ
What is the next iPhone?
The standard iPhone 18 and iPhone 18e, expected in spring 2027, then the 20th-anniversary Pro models in September 2027. Neither is confirmed by Apple. The newest iPhone on sale today is the iPhone Duo, Apple's first foldable.
Will the 2027 iPhone be called iPhone 20?
Not settled. Leakers have used both "iPhone 19 Pro" and "iPhone 20 Pro", the press says "iPhone 20" or "iPhone XX", and Apple has said nothing.
Will the 2027 iPhone have Face ID under the screen?
Sources disagree. One Weibo leaker describes a prototype with Face ID under the display; Ross Young, the display analyst with the better record on screens, says it won't be ready for 2027 and that a fully all-screen iPhone should not come before 2030.
When will the iPhone Duo 2 come out?
Reports point to 2027: Ming-Chi Kuo said the second half of 2027, and Bloomberg says prototypes with Face ID under the outer screen are being tested. Apple has not announced it.
How can I get an iPhone Duo before 2027?
Online orders slipped to 2027 within 30 minutes of pre-orders opening on 16 October 2026. Apple Stores keep getting pickup stock in small waves, often in the morning, and it sells out within minutes. InStock Radar checks every Apple Store and alerts you when one near you has it.
How reliable are iPhone leaks?
It depends on the source. Mark Gurman (Bloomberg) and Ming-Chi Kuo have years of correct calls on Apple hardware; supply-chain analysts are better on volumes than on designs; Weibo leakers are early and often right on screen sizes but miss more. Each entry here says who said it and whether it has been confirmed, disputed or proven right.
